Meet Fitness Inspiration + Super Mom, Shane Myers

What started out as intimidation soon turned into a labor of love. Shane Myers didn’t allow her fear of the unknown to get the best of her.

After getting over her initial fears, this mom of two has been taking classes at Fhitting Room for a year and discovered her self-confidence along the way. In her interview below, Shane discusses how fitness has given her the strength she needs to stand as a powerful role model for her daughters.

1.     How long have you been FHIXing at Fhitting Room?
I took my first Fhitting Room class shortly after it opened on the Upper West Side about a year ago.

2.     What keeps you coming back?
At first, I felt intimidated and I had to force myself to sign up for a package. I had never swung a kettlebell, done a box jump or a snatch… I felt totally out of my league. After the initial soreness wore off and I mustered up some courage, I went back. I was intrigued, but still skeptical that I would be able to workout at such an intense level. Almost immediately, the instructors made me feel comfortable by working with me to show me proper grips and body positioning during the movements. They learned my name and used it during class which made me feel accountable and, in turn, made me work harder. Besides the amazing FHITpros, I would say the results keep me coming back. I'm 35 and in the best shape of my life!

3.     How does fitness influence the rest of your life?
Fitness has become part of who I am. Every day that begins with a workout makes me a happier person, which influences me at home as a mother and at work as a professional.

4.     What does “fitness” mean to you?
To me, fitness is not just about having a strong and able body; it’s also a state of mind. Fitness is looking forward to pushing yourself and the feeling of pride and accomplishment when you know you gave your all. It’s a relationship between your mind and your body where “working out” is no longer a chore. It’s a pleasure.

5.     Tell us a little bit about your journey with fitness. Where did you start, where are you now, and how did you get here?
I’ve always loved working out, I’ve just never felt confident in my I've tried a variety of classes and never felt like I could excel until I came to Fhitting Room. I used to blend into the background of classes and do the bare minimum, but that's not really an option at Fhitting Room. The instructors know your name and they push you towards goals you didn't even realize you had. When I started these classes, I couldn't swing a kettlebell to save my life. Now, I'm swinging bells from the bottom rack and feeling more confident and stronger than ever.

6.     What keeps you moving? What is your ultimate motivation?
The feeling of pride I have after I finish a class or begin lifting heavier weights is priceless. I want to be a positive example for my daughters and show them that women can be strong. I want them to see that training and pushing their bodies and minds past their comfort zones can allow them to be the best versions of themselves.

7.     Do you frequent any other gyms/studios aside from Fhitting Room?
I've tried every popular NYC class you can think of from Barry's Bootcamp to SoulCycle. The classes are all great, but nothing has motivated me the way Fhitting Room has. I also run New York Road Runners races and will be doing the New York City Triathlon this year.

8.     What does a day in the life of Shane look like?
During the week, after I drop my girls off at school, I begin every day with a Fhitting Room class. After that, I shower and head into my office for a full day of work.

9.     How do you make time for working out?
Working out has become a priority; a necessity, even. I slid my office schedule to allow for morning workouts.

10.     Favorite workout?
I'll be lazy and say that my favorite workout is anything to do with laying down, sit-ups, chest presses, or flutter kicks. I'm so tired during class that I always welcome the small break, haha!

11.     Favorite post-workout snack?
I take class in the morning, so I typically have my breakfast, a protein shake, on the subway en route to work.

12.     Favorite workout song?
I love anything with a good beat. I don't know if I have an absolute favorite, but great hip-hop during a workout is a must!
